Virtualisation and Server Consolidation

What is virtualisation?

Virtualisation allows you break the one-to-one relationship between a physical server and an application that runs on it. It allows you to create multiple virtual servers to run different applications all within one physical server. A form of logical partitioning that lets you run multiple machines simultaneously. Ultimately this allows for better hardware utilisation and reduces costs given less physical servers are required.

What are the key benefits of virtualisation?

Consolidation of physical servers

  • Better utilisation of the physical servers you do invest in.
  • Ability to copy production environments into virtual machines to test or share with different divisions or teams within your business.

Improved access and utilisation of San resources

  • Improved SAN Storage utilisation as it becomes a pooled resource
  • Costs are further reduced because virtual servers reduce not only the number of physical servers required, but also require fewer ports and cards to access pooled resources on a SAN.

Business continuity & Disaster Recovery

  • Virtualisation allows for simplified and repeatable processes to implement business continuity solutions relative to non-virtualised environments. Virtual machines can be copied or federated as they are hardware independent.
  • Faster, more flexible and more reliable disaster recovery at a lower cost can be achieved through removal of dependencies of operating systems on specific hardware.
  • Virtualisation provides you the choice to run fewer hardware platforms but with increased resiliency. Ultimately this can provide significant reductions in planned and unplanned downtime.

Benefits now and in the future – the digital data explosion

One thing seems certain in the future: The average business' digital data storage requirements are growing dramatically. Businesses are requiring more and more efficiencies to manage this. Virtualisation is a key solution in the management of this issue.

Why CCL for your virtualisation requirements?

Experienced in establishing small and large virtualised environments

  • CCL have designed and implemented both small and large virtualisation projects for customers right across the country.  We have significant experience in managing all the technical issues related with setting up new virtualised environments when old server environments have been neglected, to migrating old virtualised environments to new ones.
  • We have experience in migrating both Microsoft and Linux environments to virtual environments.
  • CCL have developed smart toolsets and processes around virtualising environments – As with most professions when you have experience you know where issues may arise and you develop systems and processes to address these.  In particular for large scale virtual migrations CCL has developed smart toolsets to automate, audit and migrate environments.

Highly experienced Infrastructure provider

  • CCL is an award winning infrastructure provider. Most recently winning IBM Storage Business Partner 2011
  • CCL design and manage multiple on premise, co-location and shared private Cloud infrastructure environments.

Highly experienced Data Centre operator

  • CCL owns and operates multiple Data Centres across New Zealand and can help customers not only virtualise their environment, but also assist in delivering managed infrastructure solutions to complement a customer’s infrastructure plan
