Video and AI crafts data-driven insights for the commercial fishing sector
Discover how on-board footage capture, 4G wireless transmission, and an AI-powered cloud platform is helping to modernise the management of New Zealand’s fisheries.
Spark Business Group and CCL implemented a secure, automated data collection system for commercial fishing vessels. Equipped with on-board cameras and a YellowFin unit, data is encrypted and seamlessly transmitted to an AWS Cloud platform for analysis.
,
The challenge
Use technology to improve the verification of data collected from fishing vessels.
The solution
Converged technologies including IoT, AI and machine learning, cloud computing, and data and analytics, delivered in a single supplier operating model through Spark Business Group.
The results
Independent data collection that reinforces confidence in our fishing industry's sustainability and enables more decisive management decisions.
On-board camera systems to support sustainable fisheries
Spark Business Group is combining video capture with IoT and an AI-powered cloud platform for better data processing and analytics. The on-board camera systems provide data that is later reviewed and analysed by trained MPI staff to verify and support fisher reporting of in-scope fishing activities.
Three big benefits
Improving processing efficiency through 4G connectivity: Automatic data transfer occurs via Spark's 4G network when vessels are in range, eliminating the need for manual downloads while in port.
Streamlining data capture with AI technology: The system automatically captures data when relevant fishing activities occur, optimising storage and streamlining the review process.
Advancing sustainable fishing practices: The collected data strengthens New Zealand's sustainable fisheries management and enhances the sector's international standing.
From ocean to cloud
The Challenge:
Collecting data from hundreds of vessels across New Zealand's commercial inshore fishing areas presented significant logistical hurdles. The traditional method of manually transferring data via external hard drives when vessels returned to port was inefficient and resource-intensive. A real-time solution was needed to streamline this process.
The Solution:
Leveraging Spark's 4G network, we implemented an automated data collection system. Each vessel is equipped with an integrated technology package comprising of on-board cameras, a marine-grade antenna, a display monitor, and a YellowFin unit for data encryption. Data is automatically and securely transmitted via Spark's mobile network to an AWS Cloud platform, developed by Spark Business Group's cloud division CCL.
Smart Technology:
The system uses advanced activity recognition algorithms to optimise data collection, activating only during relevant fishing operations. All data is encrypted to ensure privacy and security.
Data Analysis:
MPI analysts access a secure web platform to review time-stamped data alongside electronic fishing reports, enabling efficient verification of reported activities.
Future Development:
The AI roadmap includes plans to enhance the system's capabilities through automated species recognition, optimised data processing, streamlined reporting systems, and improved storage efficiency.
Technical Architecture:
The platform utilises AWS SageMaker for machine learning capabilities, Timestream for serverless time-series database management, Lambda for serverless computing, and IAM for secure access management. AppStream delivers the secure web interface, allowing analysts to access and review data efficiently.
Helping lead the way
Scale and Impact:
The system will be operational on up to 300 inshore commercial fishing vessels in New Zealand, representing a 15% increase in global on-board camera monitoring coverage.
Industry Benefits:
The collected data strengthens New Zealand's position as a leader in sustainable fisheries management while enhancing our international market credibility.
Seamless Operation:
The automated system requires minimal crew interaction, with brief system checks at fishing event start and end points.
Data Integrity:
Advanced encryption protocols, private networks, and secure cloud infrastructure ensure data authenticity throughout the collection and analysis process.
Future-Ready:
Ongoing AI development will enhance the system's capabilities, including automated species identification and advanced monitoring features.
